Finding a student room in Ghent: how to go about it.

Ghent is a true student city. Ghent University, HOGENT, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences and LUCA School of Arts have campuses there, most of them in and around the centre. A good room starts with one question: where are your classes?

Choose your neighbourhood based on your campus.

Around the Overpoort, Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat and Sint-Pietersplein you will find several Ghent University buildings, such as Campus UFO. The historic centre is close by. If you study at Artevelde or Sint-Lucas, you can also reach your campus quickly from the centre.

Ghent is a cycling city. Many students do everything by bike, so look mainly at cycling distance. If you go home at the weekend, also check how quickly you can reach Gent-Sint-Pieters station.

Start early.

Many students look for a room in spring for the next academic year. The earlier you start, the more choice you have and the more calmly you can compare. At Cobane we work with viewing days: sign up and we will let you know when the next viewing day takes place.

What to check during a visit.

• What is included in the rent? Ask whether energy, water and internet are included, or whether you pay an advance with a final settlement at the end of the year.
• How long is the lease? A 10-month or 12-month lease makes a big difference to your total cost.
• How much is the deposit? Also ask how you can pay it.
• Is the room safe? Ask about the certificate of conformity and check for smoke detectors.
• What is the EPC label? A better label means a better insulated building.
• Which spaces do you share? Look at the kitchen, the bathrooms and who cleans them.
• Where can you leave your bike? In a cycling city like Ghent, a safe bike shed is worth its weight in gold.
