Finding a student room in Antwerp: how to go about it.

Antwerp is a big student city. The University of Antwerp, AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Karel de Grote University of Applied Sciences and Arts and KU Leuven Campus Antwerp all have campuses spread across the city. A good room starts with one question: where are your classes?

Choose your neighbourhood based on your campus.

The UAntwerp City Campus is in the historic centre. AP and KdG also have campuses in and around the centre. If that is where you study, the student district around Paardenmarkt, Rodestraat and Prinsstraat is a good place to look: everything is within walking or cycling distance.

UAntwerp also has campuses outside the centre, such as Campus Drie Eiken and Campus Middelheim. If most of your classes are there, check how long the trip takes by bike, tram or bus.

Tip: look up the room on a map and measure the distance to your campus and to Antwerp Central station if you go home at the weekend.

Start early.

What to check during a visit.

• What is included in the rent? Ask whether energy, water and internet are included, or whether you pay an advance with a final settlement at the end of the year.
• How long is the lease? A 10-month or 12-month lease makes a big difference to your total cost.
• How much is the deposit? Also ask how you can pay it.
• Is the room safe? Ask about the certificate of conformity and check for smoke detectors.
• What is the EPC label? A better label means a better insulated building.
• Which spaces do you share? Look at the kitchen, the bathrooms and who cleans them.
• Where can you leave your bike? A locked bike shed is no luxury in Antwerp.
