Guide
Finding a student room in Brussels: how to go about it.
Brussels is a big, bilingual student city. VUB, ULB, UCLouvain Saint-Louis, KU Leuven Campus Brussels, Odisee, Erasmus University of Applied Sciences and Arts and LUCA School of Arts all have campuses there. They are spread over different municipalities. A good room starts with one question: where are your classes?
Choose your neighbourhood based on your campus.
If you study at Saint-Louis, KU Leuven Campus Brussels or Odisee, the centre around Brussels Central is a logical choice. For VUB and ULB, many students look at Ixelles and Etterbeek.
Brussels is big. So look not only at the distance, but also at how you get there: by metro, tram, bus or bike. If you go home at the weekend, also check how quickly you can reach the station.
Start early.
Many students look for a room in spring for the next academic year. The earlier you start, the more choice you have and the more calmly you can compare. At Cobane we work with viewing days: sign up and we will let you know when the next viewing day takes place.
What to check during a visit.
- What is included in the rent? Ask whether energy, water and internet are included, or whether you pay an advance with a final settlement at the end of the year.
- How long is the lease? A 10-month or 12-month lease makes a big difference to your total cost.
- How much is the deposit? Also ask how you can pay it.
- Is the room safe? Check for smoke detectors and ask about the fire safety of the building.
- What is the EPB label? In Brussels the energy label is called EPB. A better label means a better insulated building.
- Which spaces do you share? Look at the kitchen, the bathrooms and who cleans them.
- How easy is it to get there? Look for the nearest metro, tram or bus stop.
Please note: Brussels has its own rental rules, which differ from those in Flanders. If in doubt, always ask the landlord to explain.
